This issue鈥檚 cover article examined parental knowledge, attitudes, efficacy, and protective behaviors about thirdhand smoke and the toxic mixture of chemicals left in indoor environments after smoking stops. Parents with children 0鈥12 years had significantly higher knowledge, attitudes, efficacy, and protective behaviors than did parents with children 0鈥17 years. In addition, statistical modeling significantly accounted for thirdhand smoke-related parent behaviors with the strongest independent associations being attitudes, smoking status, reaction to the smell of tobacco smoke, home ownership, and age. Overall, families with adolescents require education to protect all children from exposure to thirdhand smoke.

Shortcomings in traditional methods to understanding sources of bacterial contamination in water bodies limit the ability of public health officials to adequately protect public health and mitigate pollution sources. This issue鈥檚 cover article, 鈥淢icrobial Source Tracking in the Sasco Brook, Lower Farm River, and Goodwives River Watersheds of Long Island Sound,鈥 used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as a tool for microbial source tracking to attempt to identify host species contributing bacteria to three watersheds that flow into Long Island Sound. While the study had limitations and further research is needed, DNA analysis can be an effective public health tool toward bacterial source identification that can aid in determining if source bacteria are a potential threat to public health and to guide remediation efforts.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that there are 450,000 brownfield sites in the U.S. Less than 7% of the estimated brownfields in the U.S. have undergone assessment and only a fraction have been cleaned up. This low percentage highlights the challenges associated with brownfield sites from economic, regulatory, environmental, and public health perspectives. This issue鈥檚 cover article provides an overview of brownfields redevelopment in the U.S. with a focus on regulatory, public health, and sustainable development frameworks. A broader focus on brownfields redevelopment could reduce the inequity and health disparities typically seen in areas with distressed environments, as well as improve population health and the environment over the long term.

About the Cover

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are the rapid growth of algae that can produce toxic or harmful effects in people and animals. Defining HAB exposure and related illness can be challenging. This issue鈥檚 cover article, 鈥淓valuation of Electronic Health Records to Monitor Illness From Harmful Algal Bloom Exposure in the United States,鈥 queried the MarketScan Research Databases between January 2009 and April 2019 for use of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes for HAB exposure. The study found that although the HAB-related ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes were used infrequently, they were most often recorded during bloom seasons in warmer months. This analysis is the first that uses a large-scale national database of de-identified health records to understand the use of medical diagnostic codes related to algae exposure.

About the Cover

Environmental health officers are exposed to various physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial hazards as frontline public health professionals. These exposures to workplace hazards, however, can be overlooked. This issue鈥檚 cover article, 鈥淥ccupational Health and Safety Issues Faced by Environmental Health Officers: A Perspective From Western Australia,鈥 surveyed environmental health officers about health and safety hazard concerns in the workplace, job demands, workplace violence, and physical demands in the workplace. Environmental health officers perceive themselves as being at risk of exposure to a range of workplace hazards, with the ones of most concern being workplace stress; workplace violence; sharps injury; and slips, trips, and falls. This study provides useful preliminary information in understanding occupational health and safety issues in the environmental health profession. While more research is warranted, this study can help inform guidance and strategies to better protect environmental health professionals.

\r\n To contain the COVID-19 outbreak and mobilize mitigation efforts, public health surveillance relies heavily on individual COVID-19 test results. A shortage of supplies, equipment, facilities, public health professionals, and trained laboratory personnel creates challenges for the detection and management of the outbreak, especially in rural and underserved communities. Clinical testing might not be feasible or cost-effective for monitoring the community spread of COVID-19, especially in rural areas. Robust surveillance approaches with a greater coverage potential are needed for developing effective public health strategies during the current pandemic. Findings from recent studies show that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can be detected in stool samples collected from hospitalized individuals, which has led to a new surveillance approach for testing sewage to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. This approach offers a tremendous potential for real-time screening of community spread of COVID-19. This issue鈥檚 cover highlights a guest commentary, 鈥淪ewage Monitoring in Rural Communities: A Powerful Strategy for COVID-19 Surveillance,鈥 that explores the merit, limitations, and challenges of implementing sewage monitoring methods in rural parts of the U.S. to protect public health and inform policy and decision-making.\r\n
